Handwriting without Tears: The Print Tool And Pre-K Workshop

Learning Objectives

Day One: The Print Tool

  • Analyze all handwriting curricula through the use of “Curriculum Analysis”
  • Understand the eight essential components of handwriting
  • EVALUATE – Administer and Score The Print Tool™ Assessment
  • REMEDIATE – Interpret The Print Tool™ results, write a report, and design handwriting plans for children
  • Set handwriting goals and demonstrate evidence based intervention through proper documentation
  • Plan ways to share handwriting knowledge with others
  • Understand the benefits of “HWT Level 1 Certification” 
  •  Make The Print Tool™ work for you—Handwriting and You!

Day Two: Pre-K

  • Understand how to use music to prepare children for school
  • Plan new activities to teach body awareness and other school readiness skills
  • Develop language skills for describing (size, shape, position) and naming (letters and numbers)
  • Use multi-sensory, hands-on manipulatives to introduce children to letters and numbers
  • Develop early habits for reading and writing (top to bottom, left to right)
  • Know the stages for hand skills and design copying
  • Teach a correct and effective “crayon grip”
  • Promote good posture and use of helping hand
  • Develop coloring skills
  • Help children write strokes in a developmental order
  • Promote drawing skills with shapes
  • Use “crayon stroke” tracing for beginning writing
  • Develop number awareness

About the Presenter: Cathy Van Haute received a B.S. in Occupational Therapy from the University of Kansas. She obtained a M.S. degree in Early Childhood Development from the University of Nebraska. Cathy has over 25 years experience working in pediatrics. She is trained in Neurodevelopmental Treatment. Cathy operates her own pediatric therapy business which includes both home and school based therapy. Cathy prides herself on making Handwriting Without Tears® easily implemented in both the school and home setting. She believes in making handwriting fun and successful for every child. She has been a National Workshop Presenter for HWT since 2003.

GENERAL INFORMATION

CEUS: SCOTA will award 10.25 contact hours for this program. Certificates will be provided upon completion of the course.

AUDIENCE: This course is only for Occupational Therapy Practitioners who are SCOTA members (Download Membership Application here).

REGISTRATION: REGISTRATION FOR THIS CONFERENCE IS NOW CLOSED.  

LOCATION: Charleston County School District Office at 75 Calhoun Street, Charleston, South Carolina. Parking will be available in a garage behind the building.

MISCELLANEOUS: Coffee, beverages, and breakfast foods will be served each day. Lunch will be provided on Friday. Parking fees are being negotiated at this time.

MATERIALS: All registration fees include The Print Tool evaluation and remediation package, Handwriting and You Guide and advocate CD, Pre-K workbook, sing along CD, and Pre-K teachers’ guide.

Long Term Service Award:

The purpose of this award is to honor either an OT or OTA who has made a significant global contribution to the profession of occupational therapy in the state of South Carolina.  The recipient of this award has made a significant impact on the growth and development in all areas listed as follows:

  • Actively involved to help the public better understand occupational therapy
  • Actively employed as an OT or OTA in South Carolina for at least 20 years
  • Active member of SCOTA for at least 15 years
  • Committee chair or member of the executive board for at least 10 years
