A 2-day seminar for health professionals which takes an in-depth look at risk factors, including extrinsic and intrinsic and how to be a primary influence in reducing these factors. Included in the intrinsic risk factors are vision, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, orthostatic hypotension, incontinence, drugs, drop attacks, balance and mobility impairments. We look at the cost that falls have on the elderly including the physiological, psychological and economic costs, screens to help identify those people who are most at risk, with a chance to practice on each other. We look at prevention techniques including tai chi. There is a tai chi video class, led by a tai chi master. Each day ends with small group work on case studies.

Extrinsic risk factors as well as intrinsic risk factors will be covered including shoe wear, various disease processes such as decreased vision, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, orthostatic hypotension, nutrition, incontinence, drugs, drop attacks, restraints, and other balance and mobility impairments. At the end of the day there will be small group case study work, utilizing a form that brings the day's information together for them. Assessment Techniques to Predict, Treatment Techniques to Prevent, Falls in the Elderly

This is a one day seminar for health care professionals who are interested in learning more about identifying elderly who are at risk for falls and intervening to prevent the fall. The seminar begins with a background of how falls and immobility impact the elderly. Several fall risk screens are reviewed with an opportunity for participants to practice the screens. Then there is a discussion of treatment techniques to decrease falls including education, geri dancing, relaxation techniques, breathing and energy conservation techniques and other exercises. Also included is a tai chi video class led by a tai chi master. The class concludes with a small group case study.
